Default Help from the WYIOC tech specialists!

Morning.

BC Coilover issues again, mine are still knocking but the noise has got louder and louder, its really bad

Anyone actually had this problem themselves on a classic, and know how to fix it?

Am told its the top mounts moving around when the shocker compresses. The top mounts are pillow-ball I think, and this seems to be the problem.

I'll struggle taking them off and taking them to Apex for them to check thats all, no garage, nowhere safe to store it whilst its on stands etc etc...

Thanks for any help guys.

Did you fit them yourself? Is it coming from the front or rear? Or all four? Did you alter the preload on the spring before fitting?

Were fitted in Bristol! For some god knows what reason I drove all the way there to have them done, I wish I'd have gone somewhere local, cos Id have just driven it straight back to have it sorted, and left the car there.

Its the rears, the near side is chronic, and the off side is getting there.

I've had them off to check everything and tighten bolts and nuts etc but this hasn't fixed it. I also did the pre-load checking on the springs and made sure they were nice and tight. Checked the top nut was tight. I used some samco type silicone to make a damper around the underside of the shocker under the rear arch, so I am all out of ideas.

I've had them looked at by a Scooby specialist and been informed its just how they are made, the top mount is pillow-ball and is supposed to move about, and because the BC is a "cheaper" coilover it knocks, simple as that.

I've got the Bc inverted which are lovely units but I keep a eye on them because the bottom centre nuts loosen and then they start banging about like a **** house door in the wind;-/

When does yours get fully extended? with you in it.

Taking to AST down at Autosport show today, as mine are knocking. he said its how they are , But if you spray silicone spray on the chrome tube that goes into shocker, that shoud cure it,

Its only when it extends - If I'm on the motorway or a flat road they are totally quiet, so its when they actually move. It sounds like the shocker is going to smash the arch and appear on the back seat!

The teins are quite popular aren't they - Wish I'd have bought them now

i think you will find thats how they are supposed to be then mate.first time i took mine out i thought the rear end had just fallen off it bangs so much.mine has no rear seats in either so the noise is even worse.i had teins on my other car for years without fault, and were fitted to this car when i bought it and as coops will tell you(cos i sold him them)they were lovely and quiet.when i fitted my bc's and had them at the side of the teins you could tell just by looking at them that they were cheaply made and if i wouldnt have promised coops the teins they would have been fitted back on and the bc's would have been sold.

Apex don't even recommend the inverted for 'road use'...Thats what they told me when I contacted them about both my front units banging like chuff...Maybe they could told me that when I bought them.

As an alternative to standard struts the Bc's are fine (non inverted) and for the price what did you honestly expect. If I come into some spare money I would really like to try some KW's or AST's but not sure my driving skill would warrent them

I think 'Ohlins' would be the choice for me when they extend there product range. There build quality is totally outstanding.

Think its a fair enough expectation for something to work properly though? The ride is good, the adjustability aspect is good, but to knock like they do, its not really working properly. Wish I had done some proper research before buying them, nevermind.

Have you taken your car to Bren at Apex, he may be able to advise if you have a problem or not.

My standard ones do NOT knock, been on over a year, and have had some hard use.
But my rear end knocked like hell when I fitted them and after months of looking for a problem, Zak (Precious Metal) suggested checking the rear hub nuts were tight. Guess what both sides loose, no more knocking.

I've contacted them, but am I right in thinking they aren't a garage?

So rear hub nuts - Is this a simple task? Sounds like wheel off, then nut will be visible? Also Precious Metal, are these well recommended?

Correct apex are not a garage, they offered a lot of help to the people who purchased on the main group buy thread so it's worth a try

Precious Metal mainly sell cars now I think.
Simple job, release the locking part of nut and tighten to specified torque.

Take the car to Richard Henry Motorsport in Bradford as he had good knowledge of the BC coilovers due to knowing Bren/Apex really well. Will be able to tell you if they are faulty or if its just part of the design.

awesome idea banny. Took it over to RH today, they seem cracking, quick and efficient, good at ringing to let you know whats going on etc...

So the result of today is that the rear units are going to be replaced, which I am well pleased about. Hopefully the old ones were fubar, and the new ones will not have the same fault.
