STi Brembo upgrade for 2008-2011 WRX while staying 5x100
Hi i am looking at changing my brake setup on my 2008 WRX, reason being i am upping the power to around 360bhp, and obviously the standard floating calipers which subaru have fitted on the Hatchback WRX will be not be up to the job.
Any way after lots of trawling the net i came across this post from America but i am a bit dubious of it, as apart from redrilling the rear discs it seems far to easy. I remember on my classic i had to buy mounting brackets etc.
Anyway before i start spending 1000+pound can any tech heads see any problems? maybe its a load of BS maybe its that simple i'm not sure?
Please no unhelpful comments like buy an STI
I also emailed godspeed to see what kits they have but 2 weeks later i have had no response.
Any way here is the copied thread from the Yanks!
So I've received a high number of PMs which made me decide to write this post on upgrading to STi Brembos on the 2008-2011 WRX while sticking with the 5x100 hubs. Of course there are other ways to approach this, but this thread will be my generic response to future PMs on how I did my upgrade. I will try to keep this as simple as possible.
Here's what you need:
!!!10mm FLARE WRENCH!!! Yes, you need one, and a good one. You may also need to use a small torch on the hard-line nuts. When all else fails, you can always resort to vice grips
2004-2011 Front STi Brembo calipers w/ all the mounting hardware & pads
(These will bolt on with no modification to the dust shield)
2008-2011 Rear STi Brembo calipers w/ all the mounting hardware & pads
(The dust shield lip will need to be trimmed. I used $10 sheet metal snips.)
2004 STi Front brake rotor or 2005-2011 brake rotors re-drilled for 5x100
2008-2011 rear rotors re-drilled for 5x100
2008-2011 rear STi brake lines.
(The bend on the caliper side is different)
*It appears that StopTech is no longer making the STi only rear brake line, and the part number is the same as the regular WRX number. I'm not sure if SS lines for the WRX from other manufacturers will work universally.
This is optional but recommended:
2008-2011 Steel braided lines
2008-2011 Grimmspeed master cylinder brace
Controversial stuff:
2008-2011 STi Brake master cylinder (I did not do this)
2008-2011 STi Rear brake dynamic damper (didn't even come on the 08+ rear calipers)
2008-2011 STi Front dust shield (you really don't need this)
This is what I did:
I picked up some used Brembos off one of the classified threads. The fronts were 2004-2007 golds, and I'm not sure the specific year. The seller stated the rears were from a 2010. I originally intended to just slap them on, but my friends convinced me to paint them.
I sanded them down put on two coats of 900 Degree Red VHT paint, let them dry for a day, placed on the eBay Brembo decals, and put two coats of 500 degree Rustoleum clear engine enamel.
The calipers did not come with bolts or any mounting hardware, so I hard ordered the caliper bolts from Subaru part numbers:
901120103 (Front)
901120102 (Rear)
Instead of ordering each individual part for the pins, pad springs, cotter pins, etc... I just ordered the caliper kits from Autozone:
Duralast/Brake Disc Hardware Kit - Front
For your 2004 Subaru Impreza AWD 2.5L SFI Turbo DOHC 4cyl
Part Number: 13535
Duralast/Brake Disc Hardware Kit - Rear
For your 2004 Subaru Impreza AWD 2.5L SFI Turbo DOHC 4cyl
Part Number: 13550
The David from V1Spec in Garden Grove, CA made my slotted rotors. I asked if he could re-pattern 2010 STi 5x114.3 rotors to 5x100 and he did it without much question. I ended up getting some Posiquiet ceramic pads with them for a good price. I had a handful of brake vendors turn me down when it came to re-patterning or they wanted to charge way more money to have it done.
I also ordered some 2010 STi Stoptech lines since the OEM ones were also not included with my calipers.
I already had a Grimmspeed brake master cylinder brace. I've used Motul RBF600 in all the cars I've owned, so that's the fluid I naturally went with.
I've been on these brakes for about 5000 miles now. They definitely feel better than my friend's 2011 STi Sedan, but they make noise on cold mornings on the first stop attempt. I'm still on the OEM Dunlops, so I'm sure the stopping distance is still better on the stock STi.
Was it worth the coin? Most definitely.

We haven't done anything with the Hatch WRX yet so have no kits made for them , everyone seems to go for the STi in the first place. doesn't seem to be any call for WRX brakes for this model
We did reply the same message to you
Cheers Ian

Ian could yous supply STI 2008 onwards rear discs, either a multi drilled set or just redrilled to 5x100, to suit the WRX?
The more i am reading from the states this seems the only problematic thing with fitting the brembos. It seems on your website that the front discs are multi drilled but not the rears?

I got front and rear 2008 onwards black brembos, the rears needed the dust shield trimming to fit and the front bolted straight on with the sti bolts. I used 2008 sti onward rear discs redrilled to 5x100 and pre 2004 sti front discs which are 5x100, pads and discs bought from godspeed!

Cheers, I can't find 2008+ rear black Brembos.
Anyone with a WRX hatch running rear gold Brembos?
Before anyone mentions them , I asked Alyn at AS Performance for a bracket but he doesn't stock them, although was willing to try some (however, me being in Sweden makes that difficult). I've also sent an email to Ian at Godspeed but haven't heard anything back as yet.

No we have never made brackets for early calipers on a hatch WRX. Just hold out for the later black ones , API said they had quite a few sets a while ago , should be easy enough to get a set as they don't fit the earlier cars
