Default Brakes... Why o why

Hi guys

I've got an rb5 recently and been fine foe a week but the last few days I've notices the back end holding the car back it's like I have to accelerate to fight it so got it home last night and took back calipers off both sides and found that rear drivers side was just metal on the pads yet the passenger side was full of meat. Also I think one side was installed wrong. I thought it was good practice to change both at the same time seeing as you can't just buy pads individually. One of the pads has a prong sticking out could anyone advise if this is right. What it's for and if it fitted correctly. Thank-you

Sounds like drivers side caliper is binding on hence wearing down faster, the prong is for a brake wear sensor some cars have them some dont, id make sure the piston and slides work well on each caliper

I thought it might be an issue with the caliper will check the pistons and sliders this afternoon thanks for that. Only other thing is probably last owner was lazy and only changed one side lol. Just waiting on some new pads should be here today. Also as for the prong I thought brake pad wear sensors had a copper strip with a wire coming off and when worn the copper strip earth's to the disc and lights up on dash. Is this a different methods then? Thabks for your quick reply

Hi
You have the wrong calipers on for an RB5 , they are the early 1 pot calipers , the 1999 car should have a different shape pad.

Your first picture of the worn down pads are what we class as the cut out pads , your last picture looks like the later pad but your 2nd and 3rd pic is the early pad.

So someone has changed the calipers in the past and fitted the wrong ones , so if you have ordered pads going on your reg and year you will be getting the wrong pads

It does look as though you have a sticky piston or sliders for it to wear one side , and it dragging when driving it

Cheers Ian

Hi Ian thanks for your info. I thought it was strange having these pads with prongs on that did nothing... What calipers should o have on there then would you be able to send me a link or a photo of what it is I should have on the back please. As far as I can see both pads at there rear passenger and drivers side are the same I'll just double check

Hi
These are the pads you should have fitted , which strangely enough look like the pads on your last pic

http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/impr...lug-type.html?

These are what you have fitted

http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/impr...tout-type.html

To look at , the calipers look the same , but are slightly different to take the different shape pads

Cheers Ian

Are your rear discs solid or vented.

I'm not sure if there vented or not there's a gap in-between the disc as you can see from the photo. Also here are all the rear pads lined up and all look the same. Which means after looking at your link the wrong pads will be arriving today. So should the standard rb5 rear calipers still be one pot just slightly different design to accommodate the non cut out pads?

The calipers are for vented discs , and the gap between the pads in the calipers shows it was on a vented disc , if thats the disc in the first photo then its vented.

Yes the RB5 has the later calipers and lug mounted pads , if you ordered 1999 pads they won't fit your calipers

Cheers Ian

Depends if you want to keep it original being an RB5 , if you do look for a pair of later calipers , if it was me i'd fit the 2001 onwards WRX 2 pot calipers and 290mm vented discs , its an easy fit , which you can resort back to standard easy enough

Cheers Ian

It's not a sensor. When the pad wears down the prong rubs on the disk making a squealing sound. I used to bend it away from the disk to stop the noise and order some new pads.
