Solid or not? Today's dumb ?
#1
I'll pretend this is an anonymous post because it's embarrassing...
I'm getting EBC rear discs and pads, but I've been asked the question: are they solid or vented?
Pads for my March 99 UK Turbo are DP21293 and the discs are either GD728 266mm 10mm thick solid, or 18mm vented.
How do I tell? The OE discs *look* solid in as much as they are lumps of metal with no grooves or dimples, but peering through the wheel it looks/feels like there's a tiny gap between the disc and another lump of metal just behind. Does that mean it's vented?
I've tried the SIDC FAQ, but the specs have a question mark for the rear discs on an MY99!
It's sort of urgent, so if someone can spare (some of) my blushes, I'd be grateful.
Not signed (even though you can tell it's me!!!!).

Yup they're vented..
As Jason says the venting channels are created when the disc is cast as per the disc mold.
A vented disc seen side on looks (a bit) like a two disc sandwich.
Don't confuse venting with drilling/dimpling/grooving which are completely different and are there to help disipate the gases created by the pads as well as providing some pad de-glazing.
Vented discs are VERY common on road cars - particularly with larger front discs. Drilling/dimpling/grooving tend to be more "performance" orientated.

Excellent! Not only answers but I've been educated as well.
Thanks everyone.
(TolTec - no joy with a warranty yet. Am waiting on TSL for a further option that's not £400 or more! You found a car yet?)
