Quick guys and gals, some advice before the mods move me
My standard disks are cracked and old and need replaced. I quite fancy getting better ones and hopefully with groves and/or holes to disipate heat gases and look cool. Problem is, I'm a disk virgin so please post up what disks you recommend, why, what price and where I can get them. They will be used with standard pads for now and front only. Price of standard MY99 disks would be useful as well for comparison.

Check out either www.scoobyworld.co.uk or my recommendation would be www.scoobymania.co.uk who do grp n discs as direct replacements or www.scoobysport.co.uk who also do discs (or you could try some tar-ox 48 grooved discs and mintex pads )

Should I get plain, drilled, groved or combo? Whats the benefits of each type. I would like improved braking and looks but I'd also like the disks to last (i.e. not changing them in 6-12 months time)

Grooved are probably the best overall, drilled/grooved are good for the looks but not for track as the drilled holes are a weak spot and you can get stress fractures.

Does the same principle apply to a Jap import MY95 WRX? I sure need new front discs as I sometimes believe the solid ones on the car at present have gone on holiday!
I'm not looking to spend more than £250 on the fronts, so what's the best mail order place to get them from (I'm intending to get a local firm to fit them) ?? Black Diamond? EBC? Tar-Ox? Who!?

What about Godspeed discs, and bells, might be a tad pricey just for discs, but they'll take more stick than one piece, and look cool too, only get grooved though if you're hard on brakes!!!!

The groved and drilled ones look really smart!! Are the holes really a bad idea. I mean, you see drilled disks on nearly all supercars so surely they can't be that bad?

Standard MY99 from Subaru supplied and fitted with new pads is approx £360. I bought Pagid Group N kit (Vented/Grooved disks,pads, braided hoses and uprated fluid) for £470 (DIY) from ScoobySport Braking excellent with good feel, same amount of brake dust.

If you guys want to get good group n (plain) discs and not spend a shed load as you would at certain places, try TAS in Chorley, Lancashire. They do discs for 2 pots at about £60 a pair and for 4 pots at about £100 a pair. These are made by Brembo so they are pretty good quality. They also do Mintex and EBC pads at good rates.

Next question: The front pads are still pretty new so can I upgrade the disk and still retain the pads without problems (obviously allowing a period of light braking to bed them together) No offense but I know a lot of you out there have more money than sense and would just cut your losses and change them all but I'm looking for a technically based answer as opposed to a 'the best thing to do' answer.

just put EBC discs with EBC Green stuff pads on my 95 wagon (Red Stuff are nxt up for Track use but wont last as long). Just over £200 from Demon Tweeks - best deal i could find. Not much point going any further unless your track driving as well.

If you just want road discs, black diamond or TSL group N are good enough. If you want track use then I would go for a two piece disc. Only get grooved as the drillings on discs are a weak spot as the sharp corners act as stress raisers and heat crasks will start from the sharp edges and quickly propagate with the heat cycles. Very expanesive discs get away with holes as they are cast into the disc during casting rather than achined in lazter.
The standard pads will cause no problems running with an uprated disc.

I had Mintex pads on OE disks and 2 set of pads and a disk was useless, I then went for normal pads and Tarox G88 disks (40 grooves) and they were great, £184 for MY97 pair of front disks. I put bog standard pads (well cheapo £35 pattern part set) on and the overall result was same braking but much less disk wear and pads lasting longer too!
I have just upgraded to 4 pots on the front and put Tarox discs all round and they are bedding in.

Saxo, don't buy a 150mph car and expect to run it as cheap as a Fiesta.
Good discs are central to braking performance, pads come next and then calipers.
You got 4-pots? Contact Godspeed, ScoobySport or ScoobyMania. I have no experience of TSL. Ideally you want two-piece grooved discs for starters.

Also look at competition cars (WRC, supertourers etc) all have just grooved. I see no problem at all with just replacing the discs, you can then save up for the pads at a later date. You definately can't beat the prices on Black Diamond from MSW.... i need some pretty soon as the standard discs are now showing signs of warping .

be very wary of using std pads with uprated disc, you can sometimes cause the disc to warp during heavy braking, due to too hard a pad! this depends on quality, brand, etc.
personal advice would be PAGID fast road or grpN discs with appropriate pads

Never heard that one about OEM pads and up-rated discs. The other way around may be! You wouldn't happen to be trying to sell something would you ?

the reason being that certain brands use very soft material for their discs and std pads being fairly hard "eat" into the disc, therfore these brands normally recomend their own 'soft' pads to avoid a mismatch of material.
the reason that you wont hear of it that often is that a lot of "performance" grooved or drilled discs are worse quality than O.E. and are simply fashion / looks orientated therefore you dont get this problem.
