front tyre wear

Has anyone experienced abnormally excessive wear to the inner edges of their front tyres in out of the box trim/tune?, mine are getting near the limit after 6000 miles. Am planning to harass dealer soonest! Has this got anything to do with the "tramlining" that is typical of the standard 17 inch set up which i am assured dissapears with 18s

Methinks you should consider getting your goemetry set up correctly first. yes I said geometry, NOT tracking.
Do a search, there's loads of threads on goemetry setup and who can do the work. Don't skimp on this.
Cheers

I have heard of this before, my mate has a MY02 WRX he noticed excessive wear after a thousand miles on inside edges, the dealer said a 4 wheel alignment was needed... dealer said that would sort it out...... after 6 months had the tyres swopped back to front, may have only been another 3 thousand miles on them at this point...... now we are 11 months down the line and they are as bald as a badgers bum on the insides again ( i will add he has to get 4 new one's at this point anyway )
Now his concern is that this is repeated all over again ???
Going to an independant tyre fitter to get the new one's fitted and see what they suggest......
I cannot remember who told him but it seems that this may be an "impreza" thing ?????? I drive a sport and mine look a little worn on the insides after 4500 miles so i will be keeping a close eye on them !! perhaps constant 4 wheel drive may have something do do with it ???

We had the same with our MY02. After a few thousand miles noticed tramlining on M-way, had a look at inner edges and they were gone.
Dealer checked geometry settings and said they had moved from ones measured at PDI and we had to pay for them to be re-set.
Next set of tyres I will be going to independant specialist for proper setup.

This has been the subject of much discussion here before. I had the same problem on my MY02 WRX and went to Powerstation to have the geometry checked/reset. My dealer said they'd done the geometry on delivery when new but Powerstation made changes and the wear is now much reduced and the handling is miles better too.
The tramlining you talk about nearly made me wish I'd not bought the car as it was horrible. The Bridgestones certainly didn't help matters and following lots of advice bought a new set of F1's which are great!
I'd expect tyres to last much longer than the 10k I got on my first set as most of my miles are on the motorway. So far, the F1's have been great after 12k miles still look very good. BTW, the tyre pressures can make a huge difference to handling, I'm running mine at 33 front and 31 rear as this suits me best.
Cheers!

Mine were shagged on the edges after 24,000miles!! Cheesed off or what??
I run with the pressures at 41 PSI - That ensures a central wear pattern AND a long life!! BUT you need to keep an eye on them!!
Also, do yourself a favour and buy Michellins - NOTHING comes closer to perfection + life than Pilot Sports!!

I've just replaced the front tyres on my MY'02. The front inside edges (the Bridgestones have 4 circular grooves and it was really bad on the first one closest to the inside edges). I'd done 14k on the original Subaru fitted Bridgestone Potenza's. I found they did tramline slightly, so I've got new Goodyear Eagle F1's today.
Reading up on the Tyres and Suspension forums it turns out that standard Subaru settings mean that there is a lot of bumpsteer on the front tyres, so when going over bumps or braking the front tyres splay outwards. Eventually the insides wear out.
Taking it back to your dealer will only result in them checking the settings are correct as per Subaru recommendations and them probably making you pay for that, but these are the setting that wear out quickly.
From what I understand you can get the geometry changed, but this is not fixing the root cause of this issue. The only way to do this is to get the Powerstation mod http://www.powerstation.org.uk, which aligns the steering rack horizontal to the track rods.
This change makes the car handle better and improves wear on the tyres (according to others on the forum).
I just went to Crossroad's Garage http://shop.scoobynet.co.uk/Product.asp?ProductID=710 today who are doing a good and genuine deal on Goodyear F1 GSD3, 4 tyres fitted for £240 (215/47/17's).
Not connected in any way to these companies, just trying to give something back to the forum (rather than taking/asking all the time).
No one is sure why Subaru specify these settings, but the general feeling is that they want to play safe with people's driving and would rather a safe car that wears out (non warranty applicable) tyres, than cars that couldn't be handled.

Pete - you're driving like an old woman again ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
when you've worn out the middle at 41psi, drop 'em down to about 6psi and you'll then wear out the edges and with luck the middles will buckle inwards and hey presto - double the life
and eight contact spots - should handle like it's on rails...

Apple - its very well documented in the SISI handbook!! 12,000miles at 41psi and then 12,000miles at 21psi - superb way to get the best out of your tyres!!

I've been down at Powerstation today for various bits doing including geometry and they said my inner edges (tyres) were wearing away ![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
seems that imprezas have toe out on front wheels "out of the box" as this gives them some understeer for safety but also wears out the edges (outer edge wear is enthusiastic cornering
or well out of spec toe settings)
mine's been reset to slight toe in and I'll see how the edges go - it definitely dials out some of the understeer
along with the rest of the setup...

Just remind me never to sit with you when you are pressing on. Downright dangerous practice if you ask me.
