Brake Problem

I have a my01 wrx and when braking hard find that the car literally does not brake at all, all i get is a horrible sound and a shudder through the brake pedal! Any ideas wot this could be? I asked Subaru to check it when doing a service and they said that the brakes were fine! but there not.
