The abs is about traction, lack of this and it kicks in.
As your quite lucky and your MY93 WRX actually has this (it was an option from the factory) i doubt that you will see it kick in THAT much.
The biggest upset to the ABS isnt actually the brakes, its the tyres as these are in contact with the ground, cheap/duff/cr@p tyres will have your ABS working non-stop, a good set will give you the grip and traction you need

The brakes are there to slow you down, the tyres/suspension setup give you the grip to perform this. So when you have massive brakes but crap tyres and setup, your ABS will hit almost immediately...
The most important is right tyres and geometry setup...
Or change to slicks for massive brake power...
