215/45 or 225/45 on 16's?

In the search for more grip I was wondering had anyone tried 215/45 or 225/45 tyres on standard 16 inch wheels (MY99 wagon). This would give more tread in contact with about the same rolling radius, and should fit OK on 7 inch rim width.

Downside may be poorer steering feel?

Don't want to fit 17's for insurance reasons.

Used to oversize tyres on my 205 GTi with good effect.

Check this site remember the effect on your speedo reading with a larger diameter tyre.

225 tyres will rub the rear arches under load, so not any use to you.
