Anyone fitted 225's to the scoob ?

My car's lowered considerably (not sure exact amount) and currently doesn't scuff or anything using 205/50 16s...

Is there enough width under the arch to clear 225s ?

Anyone ever had a good/bad experience with 225's Vs 205s ? Thing is mytyres are doing the 225s for £76 !!

Appreciate any comments

just thought I'd add another question.....

will 225's reduce the 'nimbleness' / 'feel' of the 205's even though I'd probably get extra ultimate lateral G's ?

Cheers

Cool

fitting these would throw your speedo out, making it under-read, as it would increase the overal rolling diameter by 20mm.

Moray - thanks for that ! Forgot the profile was a percentage of the width.

Tried 225/45 16s and gave only 2mm difference (-0.33%)

So presumable that would be ok speedo wise - so has anyone tried fitting these ? Anyone get any wheel arch rub or the like ?

Yep....Got 225/50 16's on my MY99 DBM classic. No wheel arch scrape until you stick a couple of extra bodies in it. Then You get scrape when suspension "bottoms out". If your car has the wheel arch trim (sort of like a steel reinforced rubber). Lower portion of the tyre wall (near tread) will wear this rubber away, steel will rust, then it won't stay on the wheel arch anymore. Stangely, maybe because of the tyre build, I did'nt have the same problem with Yokohamas on the car. Now got Dunlop same size though. I've asked this question before and consensus of opinion was that 215 would be OK. Hope this helps m8.

SS - cheers for that - may re-consider actually...have you got lowered suspension or standard by the way ? Mine's pretty slammed so I reckon I'd get bigger problems / will rub earlier in the travel range.

Has the extra width improved handling then ? Have you lost handling / finess / nimbleness ?

Wink

Mine has the standard suspension, as far as I can tell. Handling, well difficult to say, not driven too many other scoobs. The tyres I have are the Dunlop sport SP 2000. they are OK, but not as good as the softer compound Yokohamas that were originally on, when I bought the car. Obviously if you're going to have 225 fitted, then it's a bigger footprint on the road. I have tried to find the thread that I started some time ago, when I asked a simular question to yours. There was an interesting reply from Grease Monkey regarding tyre profiles/ rim protection factors etc.

I hope this helps. SS

Ah right, well if yours rubs on standard suspension then mine definately will I imagine. Damn, that means I'll have to go for 215's and lose speedo accuracy, or stick with piddly 205's
Cheers for the info it's made up my mind.

It should improve the overall grip having a wider tyre though, because the contact patch/base of tyre will deform less under hard cornering than a narrower tyre and maintain a 'better' (not sure if larger) contact patch. On the other hand the increase in sidewall height will have an adverse effect, allowing the tyre to deform more than a 205/50. Overall I'd expect an improvement in overall grip though, but at a cost of losing some 'nimbleness' cos it'll be more difficult to turn the tyre.

I have 225 on mine and it rubs occasionally - usually with 4 people on board, on bumps on corners.

I've noticed it rubs on the bracket which the bumper screws into. Not a lot to do about it, but will be having 215 next time!
