you are experiencing "brake fade".......this can occur for various reasons, normally a "squishy" pedal is caused by the fluid overheating whilst a 'hard' pedal with little slowing down is normally caused by the pads overheating......
the std O.E. type pads used in the STI7-8 are not performance pads by any means and there are a number of options (most cheaper than Subaru!!!)
mil me with your issues and i'll help out if you wish,

Sorry to hijack the thread....

Alyn, thanks for the rear pads for my STI7, you sent on Friday for Saturday post delivery, got them ok and fitted them Sat

Hawkeye

I know what you mean, mine kind of go that way as well when pushed hard. I think mine is due a brake bleed, which is why I have got some new fluid just to run through the system. I am sure this will help.

If I was to say that my front brakes were smoking once after some hard driving, then you can understand why the fluid would be boiling away.

Cheers

Simon

PS. Pagid RS 421's all round now..... Std. discs (wearing well)

Sounds more like pad knock off than fade. Generally this will happen when you have made several high g direction changes. A typical situation is a large roundabout where you may have loaded the car 3 times and then the pedal is long the next time you brake. A quick press before you need to brake generally sorts the pedal feel out. If it gets worse you need to get the bearings looked at.

hmmm interesting, let me explain further

I dont think it is brake fade i can get this to happen everytime I accelerate hard. If I accelerate to 7000 rpm then immediately after coming off the accelerator and hit the brake there feels like there is no servo another firmer push causes the brakes to come back instantly.

your views much appreciated please

edited to include I have ds2500 pads on the frnt std on the rear goodridge hoses

In that case it looks like the servo is becoming pressurised on boost, hence no brakes until vacuum is restored.

thanx john & mike ive found out the problem (well the garage has!!!!!!) the pipe that connects from the servo to the manifold has a one way valve in it (should be one way but wasnt working properly) the dealers mechanic went out in the car first came back ashen faced and said f@@k me that cars go not brakes when youre on boost I said i told you so he said hold on, then swapped a new pipe from a demo car and hey presto its fixed.
