Which tyres wear out first?

Just a quick question...
do the back tyres wear out before the front or visa versa?
the rear tyres on my car have less tread than the front but I only bought it recently so I don't know if they have been swapped about. I want all four to wear out at the same time.....
Cheers

The fronts.
Under normal driving the rears can last 40,000 miles. The fronts will typically last 15,000 - 20,000.
For enthusiastic driving, halve these figures.

Simon,
The fronts wear down quicker, well at least they do on mine. The backs on mine have about 6mm tread left compared to the fronts which have 4mm.
They were all fitted at the same time, must be the "Starsky & Hutch" cornering I've been doing.![](http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif)

Cheers guys, this is what I suspected which is why I was confused to find my rear tyres with less tread than the front... obviously have been switched already.
Thank you

40K is possible if you drive like Miss Daisy. My original Pirelli Pzero's have lasted 22k. No track days, but lots of enthusiastic B-roads.

I've done 8400 on my RE010's and the fronts are down to the wear indicators and the backs are about 1mm behind (never been swapped round).
I suspect people who get enormous mileages out of tyres must do a lot of motorway miles.

I assume fronts wear quicker because of the understeer problem. Is this cut with the bumpsteer mod , anyone?
And Pete - 40k? How?
I though 16k for a rotated set of RE010's was a lot...

We've have a few service customers that do very high motorway mileage and these figures are beatable.
On the other hand, I don't get anywhere these figures from my cars

Goodyear F1's - 16K (fronts) and 19k (rears)

I do a lot of motorway driving and my RE010's have lasted 15k miles. The backs are about 1mm behind. I am going to change these to SO2 PP's and see what happens. For the first time today I felt the front wheels fight for gripl

I do hardly any motorway driving and after 9000 miles my RE010's are down to 5mm at the front and 6mm at the back.
Anybody have any idea how much tread these tyres have when they are new??

I want some of those tyres, I've got about 500 miles left on my second set of tyres, and the car is getting towards 8,000 miles now.
Std tyres - 4.5k miles: 2mm front, 2.2mm rear.
17" Toyos - having to run 38psi front 36psi rear now, as there is no tread left on the edges, and the middles still have about 4mm. 3k and counting. 12 laps of Bruntingthorpe and 1 WTB course might account for the Toyos though

Posted for Nigel who emailed his response to me :
Amazing set of Reponses so far! I need a new set (RE010s) on my 1999 car which has covered 15000 miles. Interestingly, the rears are to the wear indicators but fronts have 2/3mm left .... 3K of the miles were towing a caravan which maybe accounts for rears wearing more. How on earth can anyone get 40K out of them? Were these 010s I wonder?

Don't know how anyone can get as much as 40K... you can visably see my Continental tyres lose tread weekly and I drive moderatly on A roads with the ocassional motorway.
