Red face Very loud screeching from brakes

Have the Godspeed 335mm kit (Ferodo DS2500 pads) on my RB5. I've noticed after driving the car hard, there's a horendous screeching noise coming from the NSF wheel. Sounds like somthing's stuck between pad/disc or something is rubbing against the disc.

Only happens when the brakes get really hot and is there constantly and gets faster as speed increases. You can even here it at 90mph+ with the passenger window down.

Seems brake related since it disappears instantly as soon as I touch the brakes. Don't need to stomp on the brakes, just the lightest of touches stops it.

If I drive for 15-20mins without using the brakes hard, the noise starts to disappear (I guess since the disc is cooling down).

Once the cars been left for an hour the noise is completely gone. As soon as I give the brakes some abuse it starts off again.

Any ideas on what to check first?

Stefan

sounds like the pads are "closing" a tolerance with heat..............make sure your calipers are totally free (and clean!!), and that the pads are free to move on the pins, etc...............
hope this helps

Sorry for sounding like a dumbass, but what do you mean by "totally free" and "pads are free to move on pins"?

Just how much movement should there be with the pad?

if the pins are "crudded" up then the pad doesn't slide in and out when you depress the pedal and can get stuck at a slight angle in the caliper.................same happens if the pad is tight in the caliper....................

can you slide the pads in and out of the caliper (radially) nice and easy?? if not file the short edges of the pad until you can...........

OK, thanks for that. I'll have a look over the weekend.

OK, slight update on this. Had a look at the fronts and all seems well. Car's in the Dealers tomorrow, so I'll ask them to double check for me.

Strange thing is, I was driving along the motorway this morning. Steady 75-80 for 20-miles and virtually no braking used. A truck pulled out in front of me to overtake, so I had to slow to about 65 (from 80) and the screeching started again. This time I swear to was coming from the rear of the car (quite possible it's always been the rear).

As it started it was fairly quiet and sure enough if I touched the brakes it went away immediately. Then it just got louder and louder and just sounded as if it was coming from the nearside (couldn't differentiate between front and rear wheels).

As I pulled off the motorway, I braked hard from about 70 down to 40 and drove into the office carpark (still screeching, but ever so slightly). Had a quick look at the rears and they were pinging as if cooling down. Noticed a 1mm lip on the disc and when I touched them with my finger, they were damn hot. Should they be hot enough to melt skin after such short usage? Obviously they'll get feckin hot, but it felt like I'd been thrashing the @sre off them for about 30 mins.

Perhaps the pads are rubbing the disc all the time? Any suggestions?

do the pads look uneven in there thickness from one side of the car to the other , thats usually an indication that the calipers are sticking , which from what you have said sounds like what is happening , if thats the case they need to be stripped and rebuilt , it should wear the discs that quickly on the rears , you havent had then that long have you...

No, can't quite remember when I bought them but I don't think it's any longer than 5-6 months. I'll check the other side for wear and ask the Dealer to have a look tomorrow.

Cheers,

Stefan

Just to let everyone know that the Dealer found that the rear pads were binding in the calipers (that's what I get for fitting them myself ). They stripped them down and filed the edges of the pad to allow a little more room for movement.

So far (touch wood) I've had no problems
