Question

Hi there. Last week I got my first Impreza. An 98MY with 16.000 Km on the clock. It's in good shape. One thing attracts my attention. The size of the tyres. The car has standart wheels and 225 rubber. Can one fit 225 tyres on the standart wheels? What is the best setup? I do not want to buy 17" wheels. Thanks for any help.

Nelson, welcome M8. Sounds like you've got a nice low mileage car. But the tyres are mad.

The standard tyres are 205/50x16 - nearly an inch narrower. Clearly, 225 tyres will fit the standard 16x7in wheel, but I suspect 8in is the recommended width and they will be a very tight squeeze on the car. The main problem will be clearance of the rear outside-upper of the wheel arch when you're on full compression, eg rear seat passengers and a swift roundabout. Are there any signs of rubbing there?

What is the full make and spec of your tyres? They could be giving you false speedo readings (ie telling you you're going slower than you are). They will also be quite heavy, leading to possible handling problems but unlikely, and wide tyres are prone to tramlining.

Sorry to bombard you with questions rather than answers. Don't panic! Give us some more info and I'm sure you'll get good advice from someone.

Good luck.
