Brake pad bedding in?
#1
I've got my first track day at Elvington
next Saturday so after reading all the
threads thought I had better get some spare brake pads sorted. I've ordered some EBC
Red stuff front pads (apparently EBC recommend these for the Scooby front now)
and EBC Green stuff for the rears from
Motorsport Direct (£97 for fronts and £33 for
the rears).
Anyway - what I want to know is should I
leave the standard Subaru pads on for the
track day (a weeks time), as I dont know
if the EBC pads will be bedded in in time,
i.e. how long does it take to bed pads in
ready for a track day - don't want to
ruin £140 of pads but not sure if the
standard Subara pads are going to be up to
an Elvington track day??
Cheers

Damn,
I've got no chance of bedding them in for
500 miles!!. What happens if i don't - i.e
if i only drive about 150 miles before going
on track - will the disc warp/pads fall to bits etc...
It always seems a bit vague does milegae - 500 motorway miles or 500 miles braking around country lanes....
Oh well...

I changed my front pads and discs to EBC Green stuff and EBC standard disc. It states on the info that comes with the pads that they will take 2-300 miles to bed in.
In actual fact, they felt crap for about 4-500 miles and strangely only started working properly after did a few emergency stops (at around 400 miles).

Chris, bedding in pads isn't nearly so critical as bedding in discs, when you've got to get the whole braking system gradually up to working temperature.
Bedding in pads is mainly about getting the new pad surface to mate nicely with the disc surface. Just take it easy for a few laps, steadily building up pressure before you really stand on them.
The most common brake problem on track days is that the standard set up can't take much punishment before fading, so you fit hotter pads (as you are planning). Then you run the danger of over-cooking the discs and warping or even cracking them.
The other problem is running out of pads, which wear very quickly when hot. Take a spare set (front and rear).
