Angry Squeeky Brakes!!!!!

Guy's (and Gals),

Got an MY02 WRX, has done about 12.5k miles and am recently finding the brakes are squeeking - which is beginning to annoy the **** out of me!!!

The sound appears to be coming from the rears, but have checked all 4 corners.

All discs appear to be fine with no scoring and al pads have a bout 4-5mm left on them?????

Any advice would be much appreciated

Andy

I've heard this is a common problem on these cars. I have a MY02 as well and the noise is gradually getting worse on mine. It does sound like its coming from the rear too. Had a service last week and the brakes are fine apparantly. Don't know if anyone's managed to stop them squeeking or knows why they do it?

Getting exactly the same but on a MY00. Rear ones squeeking constantly, so finding myself dabbing the brakes whilst excelerating to try and stop it!

Silvafox,

Yeah I thought about taking it to the dealers to get them checked out, but I think that they would just check them as much as I have and then give me the "They're fine sir!" comment!!!

isn't it cos it need more copper grease behind the pad between the pad and the cylinder

i was told that the disk vibrates very finely which produce that sound, therefore it needs some grease behind it

That's correct - had the same problem on my classic and now with my 03 WRX - ask your dealer to add the copper and the problem should go.

I have exactly the same issue on MY03, but just haven't got around to shelling out ~£15 for a tub of copper slip that will see the light of day probably a few times in it's life.
I think I'll go pester Kwick Fit for a 'free brake check' and see what they recommend.
I can imagine the conversation just now:
Spotty Tyre Monkey - "new pads and discs required all round sir, and your stainless steel prodrive backbox looks to be rusted right through, blowing like mad sir, can you hear it sir"
Me - "**** up and get some copper slip out on the back shims you spotty little t1t"

I used copper grease when I fitted them plastered it all over the back of the pad and over the brake pistons didnt make a difference. Think I know what might be causing it though, the anti rattle clip on the caliper has come off have to get a new one.

Had the same problem on my original turbo, at the time the dealer filed the edge off the pad which did the trick. Apparently it's to do with the lack of asbestos in the pads, which is why they can tend to squeak more. I was dubious but it worked for me.

Default brake prob

in the manual it says when the pads are ready for changing they will give off this noise (a squeel) to let you know they are ready to change(in my manual for classic 99)

My MY '02 did this around 15k. Cleaned the front brakes up, blew all the dust out, greased them up again and hasn't done if for the last 17k miles.

I am getting a nearly constant squeeking / rubbing sound coming from what seems like the rear nearside on my 02.
Just had the 20k service this week which includes the brake check but all fine apparently!
If i dab the brakes as I drive along the sound vanishes.

sounds like a "sticky" caliper to me....................done lots of 'full dealer history' cars with this sort of issue, and unfortunately they don't seem to understand the word lubrication!!

same problem on my 2000 classic. just had service and they have said fine. I find if i lift the hand brake (only very very slightly) does the noise go away. i can live with it, however i shall investiage lube. oh yeah im any asbestos contractor, so if you need some for your brakes, im your man...

Funny you say that, had the 20k service including break check/clean on Monday and I still have a rubbing sound appear for a while after I hammer on the brakes.
Surely a main dealer (West London) wouldn't have overlooked this
