Hi

Over the last 4-5 months I've been experiencing a pretty disconcerting noise when braking fairly progressively from above 60mph to zero. The only way I can describe the noise is a droning sound that can get pretty loud.

Are my discs warped or pads knackered ? They're the standard fits on a MY00 classic.

Scares the living cr@p out of me every time it happens!!!

Sounds like pads - had this on a previous car and when checked found the pad had worn and was scraping metal against the disc - and yep it was a howl.

Cheers surfer boy. I'd have thought it would have sounded more like metal on metal, but I'll get them changed anyway.

Will probably change the discs at the same time just to be on the safe side.

Hi,

Should it be that your rear brake pad lining is below a level of 1.5mm there could be a possibility that the hard ferrous metal could be in contact with the disc and therfore making that OLD GIT IN A ***** HOUSE moaning noise!!!

what pads/ disc combo do you run?? if you have plenty of pad material (front & back) then the most likely cause could be "glazed" pads.............the "droning" is caused by the pad failing to bite into the disc.............

I agree with stock car the intermittant droning noise you describe is probably the pad material not biting into the disc and resonating/skipping on the discs surface.
My 52 reg tranny does this when braking hard or if i try to stop while towing anything,i took it back to the dealer who said its normal and is due to the friction material ford recommend .
It doesn't really affect my stopping performance but really scares passengers,the pads dont seem to be getting up to temp or wearing down,perhaps its car manufacturers way of stretching out the service intervals (15k seems a long time for engine oil to last)

Thanks chaps. I'll get the pads changed asap. I might a swell get the discs changed too as I'm running standard kit. Prob go for red stuff and the grooved discs.

Had a droning noise on my STi7 on the weekend, quite alarming when braking from 120 to 60. Thought it must be the pads so as soon as I got home I put some DS2500 on the front drivers side, old pads had not reached the wear indicator, approx 2-3mm left on each pad.

Near side was a different story, locking wheel nut refused to come off and eventually sheared my locking wheel nut socket. 3 days later I purchased a new socket from Subaru dealer. Lasted about 2 minutes before being rendered almost completely useless, even when using an air gun. Local tyre centre got it off in 30 seconds "their" way.

Back to the point, near side pads were badly worn. 1 side 1-2mm remaining, the other side less than 0.5mm. Hopefully this will have cured my droning noise. Only thing now is that I can hear the pad moving in the caliper when going into reverse. Another thread says this is usual, still i hope it goes away when they are bedded in.
