Eagle F1's Why on earth do you all like them?
This week I treated my classic STI to a set of new F1's (GSD3's). I read so many reviews from you all, saying how wonderful they were, I thought well, why not? But..... They are so soft, you slide round every corner!
I am being picky, as they don't seem to let go, as other tyres do, but I find I just do a 4 wheel drift when pushing them quite (not very) hard. With the P Zero asymetrico's they just turned in and felt so solid, I kept going the direction I wanted, without having to allow for the drift. I have Ohlins suspension and have wound it up almost to the max, but they still slide.
Having said that, in the wet, the F1's are around 300% better than all the other tyres I have had on the Scooby! There is very little difference wet or dry and with the winter coming up, I'll be happy with them. I know one thing though, when they wear down, I'll be going back to Nokian's (had them on previous cars). Not even explaining that one, cause no-one has ever heard of them, but they still seem to be the best all round tyre.

Fitted my fourth full set of GSD3's last week - the first couple of weeks on a new set are always, erm, "entertaining" They soon settle, though. Wouldn't use any other tyre.
Let them bed in for a bit and then post an update.

Keef,
As said above wear them in for a few hundred miles
You should have tried the old Bridgestone SO-2's. First 5 hundred miles they were all over the place esspecially in the wet but after that they were the best tyre you would ever use
RIP SO-2's
Still the F1's are the closest thing to them.
I think the slidey bit is the "progressive" character
They don't just let go like some of the ditch finders out there.

I found on my old CTR that the side wall of the F1's was much softer than the Reo40 Pots that it had as standard and made the whole front end of the car feel much softer. Making the turn in much less sharp and crisp. I got rid of them and went back to the Pots. Having said that the wet weather grip of the F1's was 100% better than the pots

Wet grip great - sidewall not stiff enough!
I've actually gone to Michelin Pilot sport 2's which offer the same wet grip but are slightly better in the dry .......

Prefer the RE070's over the SO2's and thats saying something they still are pretty good in the wet but in the dry there aint much out there which will keep you on the road as well, plus the pretty rock hard sidewall doesnt flex, hence better feel (oh and they wear similar to the SO2's also )

The other problem is letting off the power at speed in a bend, they kick and you have to be ready for it more than any of the other tyres I've had. Getting used to that, but not 100% certain yet, if I'll be going for GSD3's again. I'll see what another 1000 miles brings.

They do still feel weird as they are so soft and you think they are just going to roll off the rims!

Can you explain how the rolling off the rim thing feels? Do you mean the car rolls around bends, or maybe you get a little 4 wheel drift?

I have Bridgestones on at present, they understeer so much in the wet, virtually any other car is faster (Not bad in the dry )Some F1's going on this Saturday, hope they are better!

mine are the same , the sidewalls flex loads as if you were running 70 profile tyres.
great grip in the wet .but in the dry im not as confident with the way it seems to peel compared with my old nova with bf goodrich's

might have to spend some wedge on geometry change / setup

BTW After getting a geometry check at Powerstation I would recommend anyone to get it done. It seems that Subaru simply bolt the suspension together & couldn't care less if it's straight or not.

...Yep, correct Geometry makes a big difference.
Got mine properly done for fast road use at Roger Clark on a set of Goodyear f1's on original 16" rims.
Turns in sharp as you like, corners flat, virtually no understeer and grips like nothing else and feels like i've addaed another 15bhp.
