Default mintex 1155. ok for general road use?

done a search and it seems a few people use them, but on the box it says 'this material must not be used on public highways'

i don't do trackdays, and i suppose about 30% of my driving requires heavy braking. is this the pad for me?

cheers

I had M1144's and it said that on them too!
M1144's needed no warming up from cold but were average when hot. Next step up is M1155 which are more track oriented. May work ok, but be careful when they are cold.

I have just put some Ferodo DS 2500 pads in last week. Much better pad than my mintex ones IMO. Every mintex pad I have had seems to debond from the backing plate. Must be the heat or something.

My mintex pads, (Ap discs) were £65, DS2500 £90 inc deliv, from AS Performance.
Easily worth the difference. (So far anyway, as only a week old)

There's some poxy new, nanny state, rule about having to do type approval or similar tests on all after market brake pads and compounds before you can use them on the road.

Easy answer is to write "not for road use" on the pads. Then if you get caught using them the manufacturers can wash their hands of it and deny responsibility.

In practice how can anyone tell whether the pads you are using are type approved or not. Just forget it, use whatever is appropriate, whether it says "not for road use" or not.

Guess the rules are trying to legislate cowboy counterfeight cardboard pads off the road which is a good thing but if it stops you using mintex, ferodo or pagids then it isn't.

Hi

Had the same problem the previous month with Mintex 1155, the 'do not use on the public highway' kinda worried me slightly. Bought Tarox grooved all round and fitted Mintex 1155 all round. Car suffers slightly with squeal at low speed (pulling up to a junct) however cold bite is not as bad as I thought. MY00 pulls up extremely well with this setup..

Previous setup was standard disks and pads on the rear with EBC turbo groove with redstuff. Car stopping performance was bad with that setup.

Happy with the setup I now have. I suppose its all down to personal choice\driving style.

and not sure of those prices we don't sell any ds2500's at £130 that i can think of??

the other costs quoted were for an AP specific pad on a different RRP set-up ..............

This may be a bit late, but I've been using Mintex 1155's up front for the past six months. Purely (properly) fast road use - no track days.

The only complaint I have is that they're a teensy bit squealy when cold. Otherwise, they're bloody excellent. Cold stopping is not an issue. Warmed up, they're better.

No hesitation - 1155's are great.

Kev

I've used 1155's for about 2 and a half years. If you use them bed them in correctly. I was given the procedure from the person one supplies me. When I've done this I've had no problems from cold. The only thing they do tend to do is squeal a bit when you stop in reverse for some reasons. You get a few funny looks in car parks.
The procedure I have is this: Carry out 3-4 stops from 30mph as lightly as possible. Then the interesting bit, go from 90mph-30mph 7-8 times as quickly as possible.
After this let the brakes cool completetly.
They will then work fine. Only problems I find is getting somewhere quiet enough to do the 7-8 high speed stops safely.

1166's are a bit to extreme for road use in my opinion. Had them in once and went straight back to 1155's.

I prefer Pagid RS421 Blacks & they meet Regulation 90, so are road legal, better initial bite & progressive braking than 1155's IMHO

And I did have 1155's for a while

I found them to be extremely dusty but great when warmed up. My Ferrodo DS 2300 or 2500 aren't as dusty and not yet tried them at high temperature!

i've tried Mintex 1144's and Ferodo DS2500 on my godspeed 335 brake kit and the Ferodo is a loads better pad, yes their more expensive but worth the extra expense everytime in my opinion, not as dusty either, with Mintex found my front wheels black with brake dust all the time.

I know this is an old post, but Google likes it so here's an update.

About the M1155 Mintex pads..

Been running these on my Classic Scooby STi (import '97 model) with std 4 pots, AP Racing Dot5 fluid and Pagid road disks for over a year now (including four Trackday evening events) and they are nothing short of amazing, best brakes I've had on a car. Work instantly on the road and only fade after a good few fast track laps and serious heavy braking from over 100 miles/hour (more due to heat build up in disk and pads). They recover like nothings happened in about half hour.

Ran them for about 3000 miles now and i'd say over half worn down. Brake dust is about standard and not excessive.

Highly recommend for Road and Track.

Pretty sure the 'not for road use' is either a result of them not having pad wear sensors compared to stock, or that there is a greater than allowed percentage performance differential between cold and hot that prevents them getting the necessary stamps.

They'll be fine. I'm running M1166's on the road and love them, really good pads with solid bite that just gets better with temperature. Dusty as sin though.
