MY03 tyre road noise
My newage WRX wagon seems to suffer from a lot of road noise , it's standard with standard size wheels , it's got bridgestones on the front (need changing soon ) and Michelin on the back(lots of tread left ) and I think it's the Michelin's that are causing excessive road noise , or is it just par for the course with tyres of this profile ? What are the quietest ones to replace them with in your experience chaps ?
thanks
Dave

I found the bridgestones oems to be really loud, so i got Eagle F1's when i first replaced them, they were much better - BUT.... ive replaced them with another set of eagles and they have changed the tread patern a little bit and they are now just as noisy as the bridgestones (but still 1000% better in the wet)

WHAT?!!
My MY00 turbo is the same. It's got Bridgestone 010's on standard 16" wheels and the road noise is still intrusive, even after soundproofing the whole car! It's due for new tyres in a few thousand miles, so I'm hoping some improvement can be made. If not, it could well be the for sale board!

Wagons will tend to give more rear noise, other things being equal, simply due to the open cabin. On my saloon folding the rear seats down gave an enormous amount of tyre noise that went away as soon as they were put back.
The US tirerack site www.tirerack.com gives some quite in-depth technical reviews, and noise/comfort is one of their criteria. They also have large numbers of customer review numbers. They don't cover any Toyo's for example. but it is clear that some tyres are a lot noisier than others. Worth a look, you can choose your size and see the rankings.
I found F1 GSD3 were much quieter than anything else I had on my MY98 saloon, compared to some P-Zeros and the earlier GSD2's.

I just changed all four tyres on my STi8 from potenza RE040's for the new RE070's. I cant believe how much quieter the new tyres are. Grips seems as good in the dry, though not really played in the wet yet. They look the dogs B's too! Not sure if they come in other sizes so that may be a problem.........

There's more...
More tests at www.mytyres.co.uk too, Bridgestone RE720's fair very well for noise, Avon ZV3's even better (although fewer tests).

Thanks for the replies , I was thinking of going down the Goodyear F1 route when they need replacing soon , but from what you say they might not be so quiet anymore

F1 GSD3s are much less noisy than OE Bridgestones, and IMHO better all-round. I've run them for several sets now, currently on '03 wagon.
If you do go for them try running them 2-3psi higher than standard, makes all the difference, much more responsive. They'll feel a little stodgy otherwise. No discernable difference in grip but big improvement in feel.
