Question If you have 4-Pot Brakes ....

does this mean that EACH front wheel caliper has 4 pistons .... or do they have 2 each, hence a TOTAL of 4 ???

Cheers mate ... I thought that, as looking at the Caliper it didn't look floating.

So, I need to push the pistons back on BOTH sides of the disc.

Pete

AFAIK for "4 pots" each caliper has four pistons.....two on the outside and two on the inside for each wheel

I just thought I'd boast as I have some Tar-Ox Twelve pots

nope, it's just another trolling thread from pete

posting a question that an engineer of his massive knowledge (snigger) would know anyway and in the wrong forum (that shockingly gets a higher viewing than where he should have posted it)

gotta laugh though

It was a genuine quick question ......

Can't see what all the fuss is about ...... ?

I reckon I need to replace them within the next 3,000miles ... would be nice to reach that 70,000mile mark though!

The discs and pads need replacing - I suppose I can lever the old pads against the disc and squeeze the pistons back in .... doesn't matter if I damage either pad or disc.

I'm getting too old for this kind of work, but it looks simple enough - I'll do it with the NON-**** Oil Change

I thought it was a reasonable question, hence reading the answer. My fronts are classed as 2 pot, but they only have 1 piston each, and float to apply pressure the other way. All cars I've owned have the same setup.

I think your past has caught up with you pete, now when u ask a genuine question.. people think ur trolling.

oH BTW, the **** pad change.. is

1 let the discs cool overnight
2 buy pads that cost no less than £100 a set
3 make sure that the discs are replaced same time as pads
4 replace brake fluid as used by F1 racing teams
5 only brake sparingly for first 3500 miles until fully bedded in
6 check wear every 1000 miles

( and add as required )

Thanks for that, you seem to be saying different than posters above?

Now, I am confused ..... how many pistons have I got per wheel?? 2 or 4? I have a MY00 Classic - with 4-pots!

You have 4 pistons per wheel, two for each brake pad.

Pete. dont push the pistons back in without first cracking off the bleed nipple. If you dont it could damage the master cylinder.

Cheers mate - is this serious?

Are you saying that the fluid being pushed back into the reservoir will damage something? What could it damage?

Will the fluid escape out of the cracked nipple?

I also need to change the Brake Fluid at the same time .... I'm gentle with my braking so I doubt I need top spec. would DOT3 be ok? Its £2 for a litre.

It could at worst damage the seals in the master cylinder. It normally affects ones that are on the way out anyway. With the nipple cracked it allows the fluid to escape safely. Not sure on DOT3, I would use DOT4 Still a cheap alternative to say the race / industrial type fluids out there.

My self I use the DOT 5 as I do a lot of track days and autobahn driving. Also if you are using some fairly cheap stuff, you wont mind flushing the system through with a full bottle

Thanks Tankie .... yes, I thought at £2 I could give it a very good flush through.

Seems sensible to crack the nipple then ... just never heard that before - of is it better to find a weak seal anyway?

It's a good thing if you can find a knackered seal. I wouldnt say this was a good way of founding out if you have though.
This is jut the way I was instucted to do it. Whilst I was working in our servicing bay. Basicly servicing and maintaining everything in our fleet from Landrovers and trailers, Bedford TM 8 Tonners all the way up to the Challenger MBTs.
As far as I'm aware it is a reccognised technique in civvy street garages and the like.

I was told it stops risk of damage to the master cylinder seals and something else on ABS fitted vehicles. Not sure exactly what that something else was, maybe a non return valve. I'm not 100% sure,

I'm sure somebody else will come along and back me up on this. Or worse shoot me down LOL the latter most likely on this BBS

Hope it was of some help anyway Pete.

The one thing I will add is if your not 100% certain, on any problems or exactly what your doing when brakes are concerened Then don't

I'm sure most of you reading this are more than competant but it's just a reminder to the younger more inexperienced.
