Question 4 wheel alignment...good idea or a waste of money?

Hi everyone,

My 54 Wagon's having four new Goodyear F1s fitted tomorrow - and the question I have is, is it worth having the 4 wheel alignment done? The Subaru dealer's fitting the tyres, and I'm sure they'll make a good job, but as they don't have 4 wheel alignment capabilities, I'm going to have to take it somewhere else to have this done.

Anyone got any strong views on this?
Cheers,

Andy

Get it setup by a specialist mate and it will be the best £80 you'll ever spend.

Essential to get this done properly. Make sure you go to someone who knows what they're doing. Dealers are hopeless.

Default Thank you

Thanks very much for the advice - will definitely get this done. I'm assuming it may help with the longevity of the tyres as well

The only place I can find locally who have 4 wheel alignment capabilities, is Hypertech at Bonnybridge. Has anyone in the West Lothian area used these guys in the past? Any feedback you can give?
Cheers once again,

Andy

I changed all the geometry settings on my old nissan drift car, then took it to an alignment specialist to fine tune it......drove it there thinking this is good, drove it back thinking WOW this is awesome!

Well worth the money for sure.

I've often wondered what this is all about. What do they actually do?

they make sure the:

- camber is set right
- castor is set up to give minimal understeer
- that toe-in or out settings are even (fast road settings tend to have toe-in to make them more stable, track tend towards more toe-out)
- that thrust angles are correct too

All this is done front and rear to even it all out and make sure it handles as Subaru's engineers dreamt it would.

The best places have dynamic settings that will monitor and set these through the suspension range like the set up at Mocom Racing.

Best bang per buck you could ever spend on your car. (and yes it will make the tyres last longer too)

Thanks for that. So if you get new tyres, do you have to have it re-done?

New tyres will not alter anything. Advice I've had from SC is to have it checked every 18 months, though I usually end up modding something sooner than this and getting it redone anyway.

And you don't need to tell the insurance company as Subaru's OE tolerances are so wide that good geometry is still within OE specs.
