Question

Hiya,
Whats the consensus of opinion on whether it is OK to repair a puncture?

When I got to work this morning I got out of the car to be greeted by a hissing sound. Took the car to Kwik-Fit and found a screw puncture near the middle of the tyre (front nearside, F1 215/40/17). These tyres are only 5(ish)k old. They have repaired it (and said that was fine).

Is this OK? Is there really likely to be any benefit to replacing the tyre?

Responses appreciated

Nick

Fact is that anything thats been repaired isn't as good as original, however......... the degree of tyre degridation following a puncture repair usually depends on where on the tyre the puncture occured. From what you say yours seems to be in the centre of the tread and therefore is probably the best place to have a puncture (not that any place is good) The closer to the tyre wall the puncture occurs the greater the risk, it's a question of tyre flex and heat generation etc.
If it were me, and I had a puncture near the centre of the tyre then i'd be quite happy to drive on it once repaired providing it was repaired correctly.
At the end of the day it's your choice, you know your driving style and the speeds you drive at.

Hope this hasn't been too wooly an answer.
