Default Best size for newage wheels on a classic

Got newage alloys fitted to MY99 UK Waon.
I bought the wheels with the tyres fitted, they are 215/45/17.

I'm looking to get new ones fitted soon and have been informed by various sources that i should be fitting 215 or 205/40's on them as the 45's make the speedo read wrong.

Any advice or thoughts on the subject would be appreciated

For the classic it should be 205/45 or 215/40....

As Tony mentioned 205/45/17 and 215/40/17 are the recommeded sizes.
Most people go for 215/40/17 a lot more tyre choice and better rim protection.

Just to drag this one back...

My speedo over reads about 5% so I was considering fitting 215/45/17s. That would mean I could go for the new F1 asymmetric - anybody tried them? I have run a couple of sets of gs-d3 F1s and they are far better in the wet than the original Pzero asymmetricos but the soft side walls do make them feel a bit vague. Anybody know if the load index may give an indication of side wall stiffness? the 215/40/17 gsd3s have an LI of 83 the new asymmetric 215/45/17 have an LI of 91 will this help the feel do you think?

Other options would be Pzero Neros or RE050As.

whoa - Load index of 83 is TOO LOW - minimum recommended is 87 - the P-zero Asymms are 88. In Feb I bought some GSD3s in 215/45/91Y and the sidewalls are still soft, (but that's another issue, that size is made-in-China from different materials from the made-in-Germany versions).
IMO find out where the Goodyear Asymms are made, and DON'T get them if they are Chinese.

Why not buy Uniroyal Rainsports? They are supposed to be as-good as GSD3s, and they won't be made in China. I'll be buying Uniroyal next; certainly NOT Goodyear; I don't trust them anymore. Gawd knows what the tyres will be made from and where they were made.

I have a classic, the gsd3s on it are 215/40/17 - made in Germany. The 215/45/17 F1 asymmetrics are LI 91Y, they came out well in the Evo test but I have had it suggested to me that it is not unknown for manufacturers to supply a 'special' sample for testing. If Evo purchased them through a dealer then this is unlikely but if they got Goodyear to supply a set??

I might go for a set of RE050As though I am trying to find out if that is the 'pole position' version as there seems to be some discrepancy between the reviews of RE050As and RE050 Pole Positions.

look carefully at the sidewall construction - how can Goodyear claim these are the same tyre (GSD3s) and deserve the same review ratings?

China (made in early 2007, 17")

German (made in early 2007, 18")

Germany (my old tyres in 16")

That is just the sort of thing which is making me shy away from buying Goodyears again.

Had a chat with my local tyre place, decided to go for a set of RE050As in 215/45/17 CZ (they called Bridgestone to check), £100 each which is £5 more than the F1 asymmetrics.

Time will no doubt tell if they were the right choice.
