thinking of going from 18s to 17s had 4 wheel alignment done on 18s will it need doing again

No. Changing wheels won't hurt geo. Presume you're choosing tyre size to maintain original rolling radius for speedo accuracy/gearing. ie 225/40/18 to 225/45/17. I did ask Scoobyclinic how often they advise a geo check if all has been well, no knocks etc, and was told 18 months, (probably a bit conservative).
