Default Bugeye wooden brakes - lacking feel.

Hi there,

I have a 2001 WRX Bugeye, and I have noticed that the brakes don't appear to be up to the standard of performance of the rest of the car.

It does stop, but it takes an awful lot of pedal pressure to worry the ABS, especially in the wet (surprisingly).

Is this a common issue with WRX's? I notice a LOT of companies selling aftermarket calipers etc for this car, which I've never seen on any other car (Including the classic mod-wagon the Toyota MR2).

I'm not sure its an issue with the fluid as the pedal is spongy, but I've felt much much worse on cars with much better brakes. As said, its worst in the wet where it sometimes feels like the pads are aquaplaning on the discs... The car has always stopped correctly, but sometimes it feels like it doesn't want to...

Any thoughts?

Probably need to refurbish your calipers, my car is the same age and when I did the brakes last year I needed a new set of piston seals and 2 new pistons.
The other pistons were salvageable but all showed signs of corrosion.
With the right pads and discs they are great brakes - i'm running black diamond grooved with Pagid blue pads, a great trackday/everyday setup but not cheap.
I've also got Goodridge hoses which helps a little.

Other problem could be front shocks , worn shocks will add a lot to you're stopping distances especially over uneven ground.

The car has only done 48k miles so I don't think its shocks. It looks like the calipers have been re-furbed at some time in the past too - they've been shot blasted and don't have any paint on them.

I'm wondering if the pads just glaze really easily, and new pads might sort it. The discs are smooth and not scored, and my tyres are good. I'm fairly certain that my shocks are OK.

Hmm.

Yes but they aren't normally grey. They don't have paint on the 'subaru' embossed letters.

Sorry to have to be a pain but the OEM 4 pot bugeye callipers came unpainted with the subaru logo picked out in white.

It wasn't until the Blobeye WRX that they decided to paint them red.

You can check the calipers to see if all is working ok , if you take a wheel off , using a screw driver , see if you can push each piston to see if they move , as long as they do , the calipers are fine , if so its probably just down to the pads , if they are standard , and if they are worn , they will not work that well , changing to a better pad will make a world of difference , just be carefull not to slip with the screw driver and damage the outer piston seal.

Also check for wear on the discs , if there is more than a 1mm lip on the outside edge of the discs , they will need changing.

I can supply you any parts needed , from a set of pads , to discs , and any caliper parts , are having special deal on discs ect at the moment , see the group buy page for details

Cheers Ian

I highly recommend Ferodo DS2500 pads for the standard bugeye setup - made a world of difference to mine before I changed the calipers (more because of trackday use than anything else - they were decent brakes overall). And yes, if your current pads are glazed (or not bedded in properly), you will see a big loss of performance. To avoid the spongy feeling you mention you might also want to check the existing brake lines for bulging/weakness, and replace them with braded items

The discs look OK, they aren't scored and I can't see a ridge around the edge. It sounds like it is just the pads... they have loads of meat on them, but yes they could be glazed.

As DaveR says the Ferrodo DS2500 pads are very good

They are, however, quite "dirty" in my opinion and I was forever cleaning the alloys. try Pagid Blues which are also pretty good but a lot cleaner
