Default Pedal Travel

hi there

i have just refurbed my 4 pots, and put some braided hoses on, once i fitted everything i used dot 5.1 brake fliud to flush and bleed the brakes. i have just tested them, and when i brake really hard i can notice alot of difference, but the brake pedal travels half way down before i can feel any biting.

can anyone advise me on why the pedal travels so far?

i currently have standard pads and discs(they've been on for atleast a year).

thanks for reading

is the pedal firm when they (eventually) bite? I mean a bit of air trapped in the system of course springs to mind...

appart from that.. hmm... i only have experience with calipers on mountain bikes which are at least the exact same principal... if i have long travel in the brake leaver it can be due to the pistons being backed too far into the caliper. in this case i remove the wheel with the rotor attached and squeeze the bakes on. this brings the pistons out and as there is no rotor present for them to "learn" their return position they don't retract as far bringing them closer to the rotor surface. Never tried it with a car but like i say the calipers are exactly the same just smaller... but the plumbing isn't!

sorry, might not be any use, but thought i'd mention it
Ash

cheers mate.

im pretty sure theres no trapped air but i may be wrong, i bled the brakes so that about 10-12 pumps of fliud came out of each bleed nipple, had one litre bottle and only have a tiny bit left.

yeh they bite alot better but as i said its just the travel of the pedal, it goes a clear halfway down without doing anything.

That travel is not right,i have done exactly the same with the same brakes, and braided hoses, and my travel is virtually nothing, much firmer than before.I had to bleed the brakes twice, because odviously a great deal of air gets in as you have changed to braided lines. Now you have driven around a bit, bleed them again,as any air will have traveled a bit further along the system. The difference between the first and second bleed was night and day..

When you refitted the calipers , did you fit them on the correct side so the bleed nipples are at the top of the caliper not the bottom , if you have them on the wrong sides you wont get all the air out.

yeh

at the time i put the first caliper on wrong but lucky i noticed and put it right.

i will bleed them again.

the reason i started this little project is coz i had a spongey pedal and sticky pistons, i now have solved the stickyness, but my pedal feel has gone from spongey to nothing til i get halfway down. could this be something else(as ashmurc says?) or simply need them bleeding again?

Im sure its your bleeding, you had no probs before,so you should be fine.Bleed them in this order, pass rear/drivers rear/pass front/drivers front.Get more fluid and really go to town on the bleeding,as i said mine we exactly the same, but air did come out on the second bleed, now my pedal is rock hard from the top...
