Question Is it ok to change brake discs without also changing pads?

Pads still got plenty of meat on them but discs could do with changing, is it ok to do this?

Should be, but could end up as false economy.

The old pads often wear unevenly, but they fit the OLD disc perfectly. When you put them on a NEW diswc, the uneven wear STARTS uneven disc wear and also means less grip, so less stopping power.

There used to be a train of thought that you don't change both together because the pads and the disc "supposidly" need to be work hardened. But as Alcazar said if the pad or disc has worn unevenly then you would tranfer this to the new piece. Personally I check up on the bedding in process for the padsa and the discs and then go and do exactly what they recommend.

To be honest, the discs aren't that bad that are on but as the cars going in for a service Friday I thought I might as well get them done at the same time.

Gave Alyn@ASP a ring and he said as long as the pads are decent there's no problem.

If there is plenty of meat left on the pads , then yes you can use them on new discs , the discs will be worn and not perfectly flat like a new disc is , so you would have to flatten off the pads or you will end up damaging the new discs , get some emery cloth or sand paper on a flat surface , and rub the pads back and forth on it , checking the pad surface as you go , you will the difference in the pad surface , you need to do it until the pad surface looks the same , and you can see the sandpaper has rubbed the whole surface of the pads , they will be flat to fit to your new discs then without causing any damage

Hope this helps
Cheers Ian
