I had 2 tyres fitted by a local garage on Thursday and when I got home and started cleaning the sealing gunk off, noticed the following damage. Basically, could this have been caused by the fitter? Both wheels are just as bad!!!

If you left the car with them that could explain as they could have caught something on the way in/out of workshop or worst case they went for ablast and did it.

Looks like kerb damage to me (Usually happens when the Mrs has borrowed the car!)
If you had a pair of tyres fitted then the wheels could have swapped sides in the process so passenger side wheel now on drivers side?

whilst it does look more like kerb damage due to the "indents" into the rim, i have seen tyre companies cause rim damage either by failing to clamp the rim in the machine causing it to slip and rotate or if they fail to adjust the main arm correctly and run it too close

im sorry to say bud but its definately kerb damage , a tyre machine would leave a score mark around the rim 5mm from the lip ,the scuffs in the damage are at a 90 degree angle to the rim lip sugesting a downward scrape which is impossible for a tyre machine to do no matter how **** it is .
i have nylon feet on all my machines which never damage alloys even my old machine with a metal foot wouldnt leave marks like that .
i have kerbed a wheel before without noticing if that is any consolation
