I have a Subaru classic with 18" wheels and 215/35 tyres. For racing is it better to have more side wall?
At Modified live yesterday all the Subaru's seemed to have 17" wheels.
Thanks

Two reasons I imagine... 17" racing tyres are cheaper than 18" and a deeper sidewall will have more compliance when loading up, thus giving the driver more feedback before it breaks traction.
Although racing tyres will more often than not have a stronger sidewall to keep this flexing down to a minimum. Also if you consider the force acting upon the tyre when cornering on a track, with a low low profile tyre I have seen the rim damaged when riding the kerbs on exit. A deeper sidewall will prevent this.
Cheers,
Kim

I have just received my 356 MM brakes so only fit under 18". I've just had a change of mind recently and was thinking 17" would be good for track.
Thanks

Nothing i can do now lol, my brakes are here and marked from test installing them. I'll just use them for now and my 18" wheels.
I'll make the most of them and my 18" wheels for track days and maybe eventually save up again and get 330 MM and 17" wheels.
Or i'm thinking i could just make 18" wheel work, ZEN and RCM both done it, RCM on 19" wheels.
It's more about when i start competing ha
But that's not going to be for a while, another year or so.
Thanks

Bear in mind both ZEN and RCM are not running standard impreza shells... both of them are the 22B shell (RCM might even be the WRC shell) therefor have monster clearing arches/wings...
A standard classic shell will struggle on 18's especially if it lowered? We rub on the back a little, and we run 17s and even have all of the arches rolled!!

If i got 225/40/18 that's only 1/2" extra all around, so in theory could still be lowered around 1.5".
What width, ET and tyre spec are you running?
[quote=dunx;9656241]There's nothing inherently wrong with bigger wheels, just make sure they are as light as you can afford.
My OZ's are 19" but weigh less (with tyre fitted) than my STI rims with RE-070's.

What size tyres are they on your 19" wheels and what " were the STI rims and what tyre spec were on them?
Thanks

8"x19 ET 44mm OZ superlegerras with 235/35/19 Toyo R888's...
Std bugeye STI alloys and RE-070's spec'd as std on later Uk cars.

P.S. That's why I'd like to go to 8"x17 rims on 235 x 17 tyres, extra grip but even less weight for track use.
