Where are you at?
For England I think a set of 'continental' european winter tyres are the way, made for wet and kind of cold roads, not so good when it's freezing but still way better than summer tyres. Just take it slower when close to or below freezing...
For Scotland/northern euro continent you might want to stretch yourself to 'scandinavian' winter tyres, but unless you live in the mountains still unstudded. You still want to take it slower when htere is a risk of ice
Nokian hakkapelitta unstudded, I think they are called fsi, are good, as are Gislaved, but I doubt you can find them in the UK.
Studded winter tyres are noisier than unstudded, but are the only ones that have grip on ice, which can be very hard to see sometimes. But you *still* want to take it easy when there is ice around
