MY02 Squealing brakes
#1
Has anyone had this cured at a dealer ?
I remember reading a thread from some of the STI UK owners complaining about this.
In traffic its embarrassing ! Only squeals for last 10 mph to a standstill and seems to disappear if you brake heavy and "warm up" the pads.
Perhaps someone has a simple solution.....
Thanks

Same here. When i went for my 1000 mile service, the dealer told me to do a few emergency stops. Did that, & guess what?? No difference!!!! Starting to annoy me now along with the squeeking noises!!!

Check it's not the handbrake shoes in the rear discs. Mine were screaching like mad. I took them apart and applyed some copper slip to the shoes as one apeared to be sticking and rubbing on the drum. This cured the problem.

BL, mine has worsened since the service as I have now done over 1300. I wondered if it was the colder weather that was making it worse as it does improve slightly after about ½ an hour. But my journey to work is stop start traffic lights and roundabouts in heavy traffic, so I never get the chance to give the brakes some welly to warm 'em up It sounds like an old double decker bus when slowing up alongside other cars.

My 02 is squeeking like hell at 2k miles. From the rears only at low speed but so loud people turn to look at the car.
I'm not happy to put up with this as my 01 didn't do it ever.
Back to the dealer soon.
Personally I think there's got to be a design fault with the pads.
I wonder if they secretly changed 'em given all the probs people had with road salt in winter etc?

Hi Yorkie,
I had same problem! It started 15mins after the 1k service...aaaaaaaaaaargh!
Its a problem they ALL suffer from...my mates did it from day1 !
Blame it on the cheap pads.
Got mine sorted now.
I had the front pads changed last week, went for Ferodo's DS2500's...Not the cheap option but I don't get any fade on the track now!
If you get the dealer to coat the backs of the front pads with high temp copper grease, that should cure it. It's what I used to do when I worked at Perry's...worked every time. And if they give the face of the pads and disc's a light sanding to de-glaze them it helps too.
Happy Squealing

High performance brakes are noisy at *normal* speeds. My MY01 STI Brembos are also sqeeky, squealy, and clonky (pad shift). Sometimes theres a "whooong whooong whooong" at a constant 40-50mph.
Just get used to it. I've resigned myself to the fact that this is normal behaviour for high perf brakes and pads.

Thanks for your replies. It actually cured itself this morning by me braking very hard on an approach to a set of traffic lights from 40 mph. It never squeaked one bit on the rest of the journey. On my way back home 8 hours later just a mere hint of squeal for the first 10 mins.
This weekend on the open road I think I'll give it some pad stomping heavy braking from high speed to get rid totally

Yorkie,
Just when you think the noise has gone......
It will come back to haunt you......
The copper grease on the backs of the pads does sort it tho'
Get your dealer to do it under warranty / FOC
BOB
Wanna try your car out on a small local track?
its VERY cheap (less than the cost of 1/2 a tank of fuel)for the full day!
Will be posting a thread about it later tonight
Date will be Sun 21st April
Email if interested as I'm limiting the number of places available.

To follow up on what Steve said...
If the brakes "squeal" when they are applied, then it's likely to be the pads. Copper slip on the back of the pads or anti-squeal shims should help.
If you're getting a repetitive "squeak" when driving slowly, it's worth double checking the rear handbrake shoes.
When my MY00 was a couple of months old, I got this, and after removing the rear discs, we discovered a sliver of friction material had come away from one of the shoes and was grinding away merrily inside the rear disc bell. Made a god-awful noise when travelling at low speeds, but was an easy fix. Never had it since.
Rich
(PS - be very careful with copper slip and never get it on the disc surface or pad/shoe friction surface.)
