MY05 WRX Rear Brake Problem
Sorry about this, I have posted up same query months ago but then took ill and now I'm better I can't find the bloomin thread with the answers on
According to a subaru specialist my rear back plates are corroded which has pushed disks/pads etc out of line - particularly the problem is the handbrake - it's a real bugga, I pull it up as far as I can, then the car rolls back and the handbrake goes on some more - not very good Do I need to replace back plates to solve the problem? I was quoted £700 for a full rear brake rebuild (this was for standard stuff). Made some enquiries about people who could fit the parts for me, but no idea what I need Any help welcome (and I'll make sure I keep the answers safe this time) Thanks

I can't see you having backplate corrosion problems on a 2005 car , it could be the material on the handbrake shoes has broken away , I have seen this before , and its easy to fix , the shoes are about £35 and fitting would take a couple of hours , £750 quoted to fix your problem seems way over the top to me !

Hi buddy I had a similar prob to this on my 2000 turbo just the other week I was having the hub and upright replaced after hitting the kerb in ice at Christmas I was getting a load squeak after about 15 miles and the wheel would get extremely hot and the onlyway to stop it was apply the brake whilst driving "not very safe at all" . Anyhows when it was stripped down I mentioned it and yes the backplate had corrodied As it's made in 2 pieces it means water gets in between it and cause it force itself apart this inturn had pulled the shoes off the backplate which needed a new fitting kit. But to get away with replacing the backplate this is what they did for me new brake disks and pads but it still was rubbing so on the back of the disk is a lip or flange well this is what rubs on the backplate so they filed it off with belt sander and hey presto problem solved but if you want to call me and I will explain in more detail don't hesitate to ring me on 07769702232 Shaun and I will be happy to talk as yes other wise it can be expensive ...

Thanks Ian and Shaun. I have seen the backplates as the garage were pretty straight at showing me what the problem was, and they have separated. I have to blip the handbrake too when I'm moving to stop the squeek. I'm getting what you mean about the lip and I had heard there was a way round the problem so thanks for the advice - I'm going to see someone who can hopefully give me a hand at the weekend (I havent got a driveway or garage so working on it is a pain) - if we get stuck I'll give you a call
