I have an MY00 wagon currently running 205/50/16 Toyo T1-S tyres, standard suspension.
I have a set of MY01 alloys to go on soon , with 215/40/17's (either Toyo's again or Goodyear Eagle's .. I haven't decided yet). I will be getting my geometry checked at the same time (I have not had this done since buying the car last year).
Question is will I notice any difference in handling?
I think dry grip in my Impreza is good, handling seems fine with maybe a bit much roll for my liking.
In the wet I am quite dissapointed with the grip . If I am going round a roundabout at a a constant speed (say 20-25) and start to slowly increase speed I would say the car starts to slide far too easily. Prominently understeer but I would say the car is almost completely losing grip front and rear .. any more gentle acceleration and I will get a complete slide followed by oversteer on the exit of the roundabout.
This sounds fine but I would have expected this behaviour at far higher speeds. My last car (Audi A4 quattro sport with 225/40/17's would have held on MUCH longer).
Can anybody who has gone from 16's to 17's quantify how much improvement this made to the handling/grip of their car?
Ta muchly,
Doofus.

Don't expect miracles, but it will feel tighter & grippier. I did the same mod recently (with SO2s) on my MY00 and its not made a huge difference (let's face it the handling is pretty good anyway and my old tyres were still half decent) - or maybe I still need to scrub them in? Passengers complain of noisier/harder ride but that's their problem. MY01 wheels look fantastic on the classic shape IMHO

Going from 16" Potenzas to17" SO2s I noticed a small difference but since experimenting with geometry settings I have made good improvements which I hope to finalise in the next few days.

Thanks,
I will be getting the geometry checked too (probably never been done before) so hopefully this should sharpen things up .. I'll be happy if I get a bit more wet grip .
I currently have Toyo's on but may change to Goodyears if the price is right.
Next step is suspension I suppose, don't know if I can justify the cash for that though

I've just switched at the weekend from 16's to 17's. I've certainly noticed less tyre roll and a little more firmness in corners.
Yes the handling is a tighter, though I've yet to push this
One thing I can say is 'speedbumps', you certainly notice them more!
